An open letter: It’s okay to be upset, it doesn’t always have to mean wanting someone back

When flirtatious chitter-chatter turns into awkward silences and you find yourself going to the movies just to have something to do together that isn’t painful – know it’s time to cut your loses. It’s okay.

It’s so hard when sitting up until 3 am talking becomes excuses to leave early and not planning to see each other next time.

Notice these signs and listen to the silence – hearts can fall together or your own heart can fall apart. That’s okay.

It’s always hard to accept the fate of a dead relationship, especially when you’re still in love with the person. However, it’s important to understand that loving your idealistic version of someone can be just that – an image in your head. A memory of that honeymoon phase.

Kissing in dark corners of pubs, holding hands, doing shopping trips together and not being able to finish a sentence without realising you did it again – you somehow found a way to link your crush to your sentence.

You’ve started sleeping back-to-back, you’ve stopped making jokes and you just don’t have sex anymore.

That’s all okay.

It’s okay to talk yourself into trying for a few more months.

It’s okay to still believe in a relationship, a person, and a feeling.

But it’s also totally okay to choose you – to choose your own happiness and independence. It’s okay to accept it’s over, even when they don’t feel the same.

Things fall apart to make room for better things to fall together.

Falling out of love doesn’t mean that something wasn’t real, passionate and serious.

It just means that flame – burnt out.

It’s okay, not to be okay.

Watch the crap films, kiss random people and eat – a lot.

Just remember…

It’s going to be okay, just not for a little while.

  1. Ahhh this is totally relevant to me right now! Just had to end it with someone when I realised it just wasn’t right anymore…takes a while to be able to admit it to yourself though. Great read – I think a lot of people will be in a situation like this and would really benefit from reading your post.
